As anyone who knows marketing would tell you (and it’s not because they are in marketing, by the way), you need to spend more on marketing when economy’s slow, not less.

Why?

  1. You need more sales, right?
  2. People pay more attention to you, if you are talking to the right people who needs your goods/services.
  3. Your competitors will likely be cutting down their marketing. It’s your opportunity to out-do them.

There’re more reasons, but here’s a concrete example provided by the folks at interbrand.

And of course, it doesn’t have to be the money you spend more. You can market more by spending more time, effort or using more of your brain.
