Here are five things you can do to stay in it for the long haul.

5. Adapt.  Be open to the idea of shifting your intended focus. You don’t know when you’re starting exactly who your buyers will be. You’ll be surprised who approaches you to ask about your goods or services. Pay attention. You could be onto something big.

4. Anticipate change.  New markets open all the time, so keep your eyes peeled and your ears open. Trust your gut. Refine who your target group is over time. Be flexible enough to see where and when new opportunities arise. Test new markets. Look for good waves and surf them.

3. Be credible.  Referenceability is king. As you grow, build a solid portfolio. Happy clients can back you up to new prospects. Credibility is big.

2. Study up.  Talk to people. Hallway wisdom can tell you a lot.

1. Measure efforts.  Set goals to see what payoffs your efforts reap. Cut what’s not working. Build on what is. This is the single most often repeated piece marketing people will give you. Our advice? Listen.
